Cleaning & Deep Cleanings

Professional dental cleanings (scaling, root planing and polishing) are performed by either your Dentist or by a Registered Dental Hygienist. The cleaning portion of your appointment will follow a dental exam by the dentist and aims to:

    • Removal of calculus (tartar): Scaling and root planning are performed to remove calculus. Calculus is hardened plaque that has formed on the tooth and will be firmly attached. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be completely removed with dental instruments.

    • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible, film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produces toxins that inflame the gums and can cause tooth decay. The inflammation caused is the starting point of periodontal disease which can even effect your general health! Plaque is removed through scaling, root planning and polishing.

  • Teeth polishing: This procedure will remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during the cleaning and at-home brushing.
